Adding Equipment to an Electrical System? Perform a 30-day Load Study

DENT data loggers are often used to perform 30-day load studies. Before adding equipment to an existing electrical system, a 30-day load study should be performed in accordance with NEC 220.87. This study protects your system from a potential overload and provides details about peak electricity demand to ensure your electrical panels have available capacity to add more equipment.

DENT Data Loggers Record Power and Energy Usage

The ideal tool for energy audits, the DENT ELITEpro XC power meter can capture kWh/kW energy and demand data as well as virtually all relevant energy parameters for diagnostics and monitoring on three-phase or single-phase circuit installations. Electrical load diagnostic parameters, such as power factor, are captured in addition to energy and demand values.

The ELITEpro XC data logger also features four analog input channels which can be configured for voltage or current input used in any combination among channels. Analog inputs are helpful when used in conjunction with power measurements to correlate the consumption of electricity with environmental, HVAC plant performance, or other process conditions.

Meet Your Budgetary Needs and Duration Required

Lakeland Engineering can assist with cost-effective power meter rentals, setting up the DENT data loggers for your specific needs, and following up with critical data extraction and reporting once your project is complete. Reserve your equipment rental online.

About NEC Code 220.87

The NEC Code 220.87 Determining Existing Loads specifies that the calculation of a feeder or service load for existing installations shall be permitted to use actual maximum demand to determine the existing load under all of the following conditions:

  • The maximum demand data is available for a 1-year period.
  • The maximum demand at 125% plus the new load does not exceed the ampacity of the feeder or rating of the service.
  • The feeder has overcurrent protection in accordance with 240.4, and the service has overload protection in accordance with 230.90.

If the maximum demand data for 1-year is not available, the calculated load can be based on the maximum demand continuously recorded over a 30-day period. This 30-day period is to be measured using a recording ammeter or power meter connected to the highest loaded phase of the feeder or service, based on the initial loading at the start of the recording.
